All of our fruit at Nickels Orchards is hand picked and tree ripened. We grade fresh daily to ensure the best quality for our customers.

Apples are a fruit that can be bought fresh anytime of the year. September to November is our peak season. That is the time of year when most of the apples are picked. Before we pick the apples we do sugar testing. We have McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Royal Gala, Empire, Jonagold, Mutsu, Ida Red and Fuji.

Apricots are golden orange fruit with velvety skin and flesh. Not as juicy as a peach but definitely smooth and sweet. They are full of fiber and Vitamin C. They are season in our area from mid July until the end part of August. You can eat, bake or make jam with them.

Nectarines are fuzz less variety of peach. It has the same shape and colour as peaches, but smooth skin and tends to be sweeter than peaches. Good fruit to snack on.

We have 2 types of Peaches: Semi Clingstone varieties include Harrow Diamond and Garnet Beauty. They are an excellent eating peach but do not come off the pit unless they are ripe to the pit. They also can be canned and frozen as well as freestone peaches. Freestone varieties including Red Haven, Harrow Fair, and Cresthaven, as well as other varieties. They are good for eating, canning, freezing and making jam because you can easily cut them away from the pit.

Pears - We grow 4 main varieties of pears including Bartlett, Harrow Sweet, Harrow Delight, and Bosc. Our earliest pears start in August and the last pears end around the end of December. Bartlett and Harrow Sweet are very good canning pears and eating as well. They have a light green skin that turns yellow when ripe. Bosc pears have a slender neck, russet coloured and still relatively crunchy when ripe.

Plums come from 2 different families: Japanese and European. Japanese plums are both yellow and red and are the best suited for eating. We have the yellow types Early Golden and Shiro. When ripe they are very sweet and juicy.

European plums can be eaten fresh, canned or makes real good jam. They are freestone which means that the fruit easily comes off the pit. Italian prune plum is our main one, purple in colour and oval shaped.
